Magha Puja Day Magha Puja day is one of the most important Buddhist celebrations วันมาฆบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญทางพุทธศาสนาวันหนี่ง which falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month (about the last week of February or early March). ซึ่งตรงกับวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 3 (ประมาณสัปดาห์สุดท้ายของเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ หรือไม่ก็ต้นเดือนมีนาคม) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This day marks the great four events that took place during Lord Buddha’s lifetime, namely ; วันนี้เป็นวันที่มีการประชุมครั้งใหญ่ (จาตุรงคสันนิบาต) อันมีความมหัศจรรย์ 4 ประการในครั้งพุทธกาล กล่าวคือ 1.   1,250 Buddhist monks from different places come to pay homage to Lord Buddha at Veluwan Vihara in Rajgaha, the capital of Magaha State, each on his own initiative and without prior notification or appointment. 1.   ภิกษุจำนวน 1,250 องค์มาจากที่ต่าง ๆ กันเพื่อสักการะพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าที่เวฬุวันวิหาร  ในกรุงราชคฤห์ เมืองมคธ แต่ละองค์ก็เดินทางมาเอง โดยมิได้มีการนัดหมายกันล่วงหน้าแต่ประการใด 2.   all of them were the enlightened monks (or Arahantas) 2.   พระภิกษุทั้งหมด ล้วนแต่เป็นผู้ได้บรรลุพระอรหันต์แล้วทุก ๆ องค์ 3.   all of them had been individually ordained by Lord Buddha himself (Ehi Bhikku), and 3.   พระภิกษุเหล่านั้นล้วนเป็นเอหิภิกขุอุปสัมปทา คือพระพุทธเจ้าทรงบวชให้ทั้งสิ้น 4.   They assembled on the full moon day of the third lunar month. 4.   ในวันนี้เป็นวันเพ็ญเดือนมาฆะ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the evening of that day, Lord Buddha gave the assembly a discourse “ Ovadha Patimokha” laying down the principles of His Teachings summarised into three acts, i.e. to do good, to abstain from bad action and to purify the mind. ในเย็นวันนั้น พระพุทธเจ้าทรงถือโอกาสนี้แสดงโอวาทปาติโมกข์ ซึ่งมีใจความอันเป็นหลักของพระพุทธศาสนา กล่าวคือ ทำแต่ความดี ไม่ทำความชั่วและทำจิตใจให้บริสุทธิ์ It was unclear as to when the Magha Puja Ceremony took place. พิธีทำบุญวันมาฆบูชานี้ ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานว่ามีมาในสมัยใด However, in a guide book of ceremonies for the twelve months written by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), it is said that, อย่างไรก็ตาม ก็ได้มีหลักฐานในพระราชพิธีสิบสองเดือน พระราชนิพนธ์ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้า เจ้าอยู่หัว กล่าวไว้ว่า           “ In the past, the Magha Puja was never performed, the ceremony has just been practised during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV) ” “ในอดีต มาฆบูชานี้แต่เดิมไม่เคยทำกัน เพิ่งเกิดขึ้นในแผ่นดินพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว”   Having realized the significance of this day, King Rama IV   ordered the royal Magha Puja Ceremony to be performed in   the Emerald Buddha Templein 1851 and to be continued   forever.   รัชกาลที่ 4 ทรงเห็นความสำคัญของวันมาฆะนี้จึงโปรดให้มี พระราชพิธี   ประกอบการกุศลขึ้นใน วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม ในปีพ.ศ. 2394 และกระทำสืบ   ไปตลอดกาล    Later the ceremony was widely accepted and performed    throughout the kingdom.    ต่อ ๆ มาพิธีในวันนี้ก็ได้แพร่หลายและประกอบพิธีกันทั่วราชอาณาจักร    The day is declared as a public holiday so that people from    all walks of life can go to the temple to make merit and    perform other religious activities in the morning and to take    part in the candlelit procession or “Wien Tien” in Thai in the evening. วันนี้ประกาศให้เป็นวันหยุดทางราชการด้วย เพื่อให้ประชาชนจากทุกสาขาอาชีพได้ไปวัด เพื่อทำบุญกุศล และประกอบกิจกรรมทางศาสนาในตอนเช้าและเข้าร่วมพิธีเวียนเทียนในตอนค่ำอีกด้วย At the same time, at this auspicious time, His Majesty the King will preside over the religious rites to mark the occasion at the Emerald Buddha Temple and will later lead hundreds of people in a candlelit procession held within the temple’s compound. ในขณะเดียวกัน เนื่องในโอกาสอันเป็นมงคลนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวก็ทรงเสด็จไปประกอบ พิธีทางศาสนาที่วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม และต่อมาก็ทรงนำเหล่าพสกนิกรประกอบพิธีเวียนเทียนจัดขึ้น ภายในวัดพระแก้วนี้ด้วย In fact, the candlelit procession can be held at any time suitable to the public’s convenience, either in the morning or in the evening. ความจริงแล้ว พิธีเวียนเทียนนี้จะประกอบในเวลาใดก็ได้ แล้วแต่ความสะดวกของประชาชน อาจจะเป็นตอนเช้าหรือตอนเย็นก็ได้ However, in Bangkok it will usually take place in the evening at about 8.00 pm and the procession will be led by Buddhist monks. อย่างไรก็ตามในกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยปกตินิยมจัดให้มีขึ้นในตอนเย็น เวลาประมาณ 20.00 น. และขบวนเวียนเทียนนี้ก็จะมีพระสงฆ์เป็นผู้นำ In general, most Buddhists are not aware of the significance of this day. โดยทั่วไปแล้ว ชาวพุทธส่วนใหญ่ไม่ค่อยรู้ความสำคัญของวันนี้ As a result, a number of people taking part in the ceremony may be less than on other days such as Visaka Puja or Asanha Puja Days. ดังนั้น จำนวนประชาชนที่เข้าร่วมในพิธีจึงมีน้อยกว่าวันอื่น ๆ เช่น วันวิสาขบูชา หรือ อาสาฬหบูชา Even so Magha Puja Day carries an equal meaning to all Buddhists. แม้กระนั้นวันมาฆบูชาก็ยังมีความสำคัญต่อชาวพุทธทั้งหมดอยู่ดีนั้นเอง ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ที่มา:  ธนพล  จาดใจดี   เรื่องราวต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับประเทศไทย  พิมพ์ครั้งที่ 13, กรุงเทพ: ห.จ.ก. ไทยเจริญการพิมพ์ 2545 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
